The PressureMat allows users to traverse a virtual environment using similar motions as in the real world, e.g., walking, running, or crawling. Developed with off-the-shelf components, the device consists of an array of pressure sensitive resistors covered by a thin, flexible mat connected to a PC. A real-time pattern recognition algorithm determines if the person standing on the PressureMat is standing still, or walking forward, backward, left or right.
